Tomorrowland, Disneyland Opening Day (1955)

Yes, this is Tomorrowland. And it's not a stylized dream of the future but a scientifically planned projection of future techniques by leading space experts in science.

This clip from Tomorrowland during the 1955 live broadcast of Disneyland's opening day shows the same brand of optimism we often see in 1950's predictions of the future.

You can see the entire broadcast of the opening of Disneyland on the DVD Walt Disney Treasures - Disneyland USA.

How is it 1986 & there is no R.E.M. playing in the background?? Hmmm?

Had a chance to visit Tomorrowland this summer, and it's unfortunately no longer the glorious gem it once was. Mostly it's an expo for consumer electronics like wifi pens and household robots. There was a Honda Robot show which was quite nice, but no space stations, moon or mars colonies, or domed cities. I was kind of hoping it would have been just like the day it opened, only maybe a little dustier.

I wonder what's more accurate: this prediction of 1986, or Back to the Future's prediction of 2015?
